This massive attack straight out of the pages of a wild and crazy sci-fi thriller will not be forgotten anytime soon. It will leave major scars in the psyche of people all over the world. Countless pagers used mostly by Lebanonese resistance fighters simultaneously detonated all over Lebanon and parts of Syria (and probably beyond). You can read more about this developing story here.
It appears trace quantities of a highly explosive material was planted inside each pager–close to the internal batteries. Once the batteries were activated to heat up slightly, the explosive material detonated inside the pockets, in the hands or wherever these devices happened to be. The sadistic nature of the attack will serve as motivation for those attacked to think about developing home-grown communications and general tech industries in order to protect against anything like this from happening ever again.
I think it is safe to say that this is not only an attack on Lebanon resistance fighters and officials, but pretty much on anyone using any type of tech-powered device—whether it is an Airpod in your ear, a smart watch on your wrist or a phone in your pocket. If this can happen to a ultra-simple pager, think of the possibilities for much more complex and “smarter” devices.
It gives new meaning to “buyer beware.”
