I know it’s super obvious that certain voices get drowned out in the media, so I thought it would interesting to measure this slow motion drowning by mainstream media. The three newspapers I chose were: LA Times, NY Times and Washington Post.

At first I was thinking of measuring positive and negative stories, but that can be very subjective, especially in the times we live. What can’t be up for debate is the number of times a certain keyword appears at particular times during the day when you visit prominent websites.

For this particular data set, the goal was very simple: search for two keywords, “Israel” and “Palestin” (in order to include both Palestine and Palestinian) at some time during the week day, usually between 8am – 5pm pacific time.

I’m now two weeks into the data collection period and will continue it through the end of the war just out of curiosity and because it’s so easy to do.

The results are taking shape as expected. I hope to automate the entire data collection and data visualization, complete with charts and figures. If you would like to help code the back-end, please do reach out in the comments.
